What does the U.S. Department of Education say about DETC?

Accreditation is the responsibility of independent accrediting agencies. The U.S. Secretary of Education publishes a list of nationally recognized accrediting agencies. For more information on accreditation and the list of recognized accrediting agencies, visit Accreditation in the United States.

The Secretary recognizes only one agency dedicated to accrediting distance education institutions, the Distance Education and Training Council (DETC). You can find the list of programs accredited by DETC, and search for programs by subjects taught or degrees given at DETC's website.

What does accreditation mean to you, the Student?

If someone asked you if the institution you are taking a distance study course from is accredited, what would you say? What does accreditation mean to you as a student?

Accreditation is a process that gives public recognition to institutions that meet certain standards. It is a promise that an institution will provide the quality of education it claims to offer. Accreditation assures the student that the institution operates on a sound financial basis, has an approved program of study, qualified instructors, adequate facilities and equipment, and approved recruitment and admissions policies.
