Students enrolled at American Sentinel may now be eligible for education tax credits.
The Hope Credit and the Lifetime Learning Credit are for people who pay higher education costs. The Hope Credit is for the payment of the first two years of tuition and related expenses for an eligible student for whom the taxpayer claims an exemption on the tax return. The Lifetime Learning Credit is available for all post-secondary education for an unlimited number of years. Also, please carefully read the Q&As.
A taxpayer cannot claim both credits for the same student in one year. For more information, see IRS Publication 970, Tax Benefits for Education.
Additional Information
- Students must be enrolled in a degree program for at least half time to qualify for HOPE. At American Sentinel that means you must enroll in and complete a minimum of 15 credit hours per year.
- Students can be enrolled less than half time and taking single courses and still qualify for lifetime learning credit.
- There are other factors that affect an individual's ability to claim either of these credits so students must check with their tax preparer.
