American Sentinel University was formed in February 2006 by combining the educational operations of three existing institutions: the American Graduate School of Management, Sentinel University and the American College of Computer and Information Sciences. The vision of this new university was to improve the student experience and student outcomes by focusing on relevant degree programs in high-demand industries. American Sentinel reinforced its faculty by hiring additional professors with significant real-world experience and also added support services to help students achieve their goals and navigate the path to graduation.

2006

  • The American Sentinel University Board of Trust forms in February 2006.
  • In early 2006, American Sentinel becomes accredited by the Accrediting Commission of the Distance Education and Training Council (DETC).
  • The Faculty Curriculum Committee forms to ensure graduates of American Sentinel are on the leading edge of new workplace requirements.
  • Several comprehensive and regular student communication programs are created, which today include the monthly external publication, The Sentinel, and a newsletter for faculty and staff, Inside American Sentinel.

2007

  • In early 2007, American Sentinel publishes its first annual report.
  • American Sentinel is invited to join the Higher Learning Commission's Transparency by Design program as a participant observer.
  • American Sentinel is the only nationally accredited school to join the project.
  • American Sentinel is approved as a Title IV-eligible nonparticipating institution, giving students in-school loan deferments.

2008

  • Dr. Lawrence Droutman, American Sentinel's provost since inception, retires. Dr. Richard Oliver is named interim provost.
  • American Sentinel is approved by the U.S. Air Force as one of only nine online schools to be part of its Air University-ABC program. The program allows airmen completing associate degrees at Air University to enter into American Sentinel bachelor's programs.
  • Dr. Catherine Garner becomes American Sentinel’s dean, health sciences and nursing.
  • American Sentinel completes and submits its self-study for program accreditation by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education.

2009

  • The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) accredits American Sentinel's bachelor's and master's degree nursing programs for a five-year period.
  • Dr. Catherine Garner becomes American Sentinel's second provost.

2010

  • American Sentinel is reaccredited by the DETC.
  • American Sentinel is approved to begin offering federal student financial aid.
