  • Senior Faculty

    Devon Cancilla
    Dean, Business and Information Technology

    Dr. Devon Cancilla is the dean, business information technology, at American Sentinel University. Previously, he served as executive director and campus dean at New York Institute of Technology. He has held faculty appointments and senior education administration positions at Western Washington University, among other institutions. Dr. Cancilla has received numerous scholarly honors, including an award from Sloan Consortium for Most Outstanding Effective Practices in Online Education. He is the has author or co-author of more than 60 scholarly and professional research papers, books and academic reports, and his work has appeared in journals such as Environmental Science and Technology, The American Journal of Pharmaceutical Education and The Journal of Asynchronous Learning Networks. Dr. Cancilla has presented research papers and developed workshops on a variety of topics for such organizations as the National Science Foundation. He has been awarded research grants from organizations such as the National Science Foundation and the Hewlett-Packard Fund for Innovation in Education.

    Dr. Cancilla holds a Ph.D. from the University of California, Los Angeles, in environmental health sciences and master’s and bachelor's degrees from the University of Iowa.

    Catherine Earl
    interim Dean, Health Sciences and Nursing

    Dr. Catherine Earl is the associate provost at American Sentinel University. For the past 20 years, she has served as dean, chair, director and faculty in nursing programs at several community colleges and universities, including Weber State University, Jackson Community College, Montcalm Community College and Lansing Community College Prior to American Sentinel, Dr. Earl was dean of nursing at West Coast University. Dr. Earl is the recipient of numerous accolades, including the Outstanding Excellence in Leadership award from the Utah Hospital Association, following on her leadership as chairwoman for Utah nursing education programs and her appointment to the Veteran's Board by the governor of Utah. She has served on numerous boards and committees, including the Leadership Connection Board in San Bernardino, California, and the nominating committee of the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education. In 2005, she was selected to lead a group of physicians, social workers, nurses and allied health professionals to South Africa to develop an interdisciplinary approach to palliative and end-of-life care for HIV/AIDS patients. Dr. Earl is an avid researcher with special interests in epidemiology, health disparities, nurse migration, partnerships with nursing education and practice, international health and relationships, palliative and end-of-life care, public policy, rural health, infectious disease, building healthy nations, veterans' affairs and innovation. She completed a postdoctoral fellowship in epidemiology in the College of Human Medicine at Michigan State University supported by the National Institute for Health. Dr. Earl has been an editorial reviewer for various nursing journals and an invited presenter on special nursing topics in countries around the world.

    Dr. Earl holds a doctorate in public administration from Western Michigan University, an MSN from Grand Valley State University and a BSN from the University of Michigan.

    Betty Nelson
    Associate Dean, Doctoral Studies

    Dr. Betty Nelson is the associate dean for doctoral studies for American Sentinel University. She began her nursing career in 1978 as a pediatric nurse. Dr. Nelson has been an active clinician, researcher, educator and administrator. She has held leadership positions with the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, Shriners Hospital for Children in Philadelphia, the American College of Physicians, the American Nurses Association and several other organizations, and has held faculty appointments at Vanderbilt University, the University of North Dakota and Yale University, where she was associate dean for clinical affairs. She has served on various for-profit and non-profit boards, national advisory groups for the Agency for Healthcare Quality and Research and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, grant review committee for the Health Resources and Services Administration, and invitational summits of the Institute of Medicine and the Joint Commission.

    Dr. Nelson is a member of Phi Kappa Phi, Sigma Theta Tau, International and the American Organization of Nurse Executives. She is a graduate of the Robert Wood Johnson Executive Nurse Fellowship Program.

    Dr. Nelson holds a Ph.D. in nursing and health services research from the University of Pennsylvania, a Master of Science in Nursing from the University of Florida and a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of Delaware.

    Victoria Brahe
    Assistant Dean, Nursing

    Ms. Brahe has been a nurse for more than 30 years, with clinical experience in critical care and high-acuity home care. She began teaching online in 2004 at Regis University, and joined American Sentinel University as assistant dean of undergraduate studies in nursing in 2011. Ms. Brahe is a Ph.D. candidate at Capella University with a specialization in instructional design for online learning.

    Joy Green-Hadden
    Assistant Dean, Nursing

    With 20 years of nursing experience, Dr. Green-Hadden is a certified nurse practitioner, specializing in endocrinology. She has a background in emergency medicine, critical care, endocrinology, psychiatric care, urgent care, pediatrics, geriatrics and nursing administration. As a certified researcher with the Institute of Health, Dr. Green-Hadden's most recent research focuses on the empowerment of nurses in Tennessee. Dr. Green-Hadden has also presented her work at the International Research Congress, ISQUA Conference and the DNP Convention. Dr. Green-Hadden has taught nursing at Middle Tennessee State University at the undergraduate and graduate levels.

    Dr. Green-Hadden holds a Doctorate of Nursing Practice and a Master of Science Nursing from Case Western Reserve University, a Bachelor of Science Nursing from Belmont University and an Associate of Science Nursing from Aquinas College.
