American Sentinel University Hosts Third Annual Graduation Ceremony

Online university holds live commencement for students and their families.

Aurora, CO (PRWEB) June 20, 2008 – American Sentinel University recently honored degree-earning graduates during its third annual graduation ceremony, held in Aurora, Colo., on June 6 with more than 100 people in attendance.

Graduates attending the ceremony included both bachelor’s of science and master’s degree candidates in many fields of study, including nursing, computer science, information systems, business and many more. All students completed their courses exclusively through online study. Following the ceremony, students celebrated with their families and friends at the reception.

“American Sentinel was a phenomenal experience for me,” said graduating student John Tressa, Chief Operating Officer for a 500-bed hospital in Houston, Texas, who received his Master of Science degree in Nursing. “It was easy for me to connect with the school, and it was challenging in terms of the curriculum. As a working professional with a busy job, it was a very nice fit with my demanding schedule.”

Dr. Richard W. Oliver, Provost of American Sentinel, and Dr. Kenneth McLennan, Chairman of the Board of Trust at American Sentinel, addressed graduating students. Special commencement guest speakers and honorary degree recipients included Gerald John Butters, former president of Lucent Technologies Global Public Networks, and Professor Guoliang Wu, President of DaHongYing Technical College in China. Graduating Chinese students from DaHongYing Technical College were also in attendance.

“What’s happened with distance learning as embodied by your achievements today is truly remarkable,” said Butters in his opening remarks. “The fact that in the world today, hardworking people can find a way through institutions like American Sentinel to have a work life, a family life and can work hard to complete their education is amazing.”

Butters, whose business career spans nearly 40 years, has served in many leadership capacities, including president at Northern Telecom Inc. and while at Lucent, he formed the Optical Networking Group and became its first president. Since retiring from Lucent in 2000, Butters has remained active in the technology sector, serving as a board member and advisor to several innovative companies. He is a Fellow of the International Engineering Consortium.

Celebrating its 10th anniversary this year, American Sentinel University offers 24 online degree programs (with no residency requirements) and more than 230 courses. The university has over 40 full-time and adjunct faculty, of which more than half hold a Ph.D.
