Aurora, CO. (October 12, 2010) – Kathy Wright, adjunct professor of nursing at American Sentinel University, received a grant from the Florida Association of Public Health Nurses to fund the educational component of her Kids and K-9s for Healthy Choices program.
Kids and K-9s for Healthy Choices is an educational program for children, 7 to 8 years old, that focuses on nutrition, physical activity, self-esteem, family unity and community awareness. The program is currently part of the after-school [extended day] program at Madison Street Academy for the Visual and Performing Arts in Ocala, Florida [a public elementary school].The students meet each Tuesday for one hour of integrated human/animal learning.
“The dogs that come to class help the children relate the idea of healthy choices to real life. For example, when we discuss the benefits of calcium for bones and teeth, we talk about the dog’s teeth, and the importance of brushing them,” said Professor Wright.
“By relating the lessons to something fun and interesting, the kids begin to make the correlation and truly understand the meaning of healthy choices.”
The program started with a grant from The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Executive Nurse Leadership Alumni Program, and is now a 501 (C) (3) non-profit organization. For more information on the Kids and K-9′s for Healthy Choices program, or to find out how to get involved, visit www.kidsandk9s.org.
