Case Manager Earns MBA to Excel in Health Care Career

– MBA Health Care Prepares Today’s Health Professionals for Leadership Positions –

AURORA, Colo. – October 22, 2013 – Health care will continue to be the fastest growing industry in the U.S., but these jobs will increasingly require higher levels of education to enter the field and continuous certification to stay in.

That’s why Susan Headley, a case manager since 2010 at Macon Occupational Medicine in Macon Ga., decided she wanted to earn an online terminal degree after completing her associates and bachelor’s degree in business administration from Macon State College in 2011.

Discovering Health Care

As a case manager at the occupational medicine facility, Headley handled patient diagnostic testing and physical therapy appointments and also acted as the liaison between her facility and insurance companies. She quickly learned that health care is an ever-changing field with ample opportunity and decided that she wanted to advance her career in the field of health care.

“I wanted to excel in my health care career and with my educational background and experience, I didn’t want just a general MBA,” says Headley. A friend mentioned American Sentinel University’s online MBA Health Care and she was hooked. “This program grabbed me right away and I didn’t find another one like it in my research.”

American Sentinel’s MBA Health Care is designed to prepare today’s health care leader’s with the skills they need to become a manager, director or earn senior leadership positions outside of nursing.

“Many advertisements outside of nursing require an MBA and we find that many physicians return to school to learn about business and they are earning MBAs to prepare them for leadership positions,” says Kurt Linberg, Ph.D., provost at American Sentinel University.

Dr. Linberg says that the MBA Health Care prepares today’s health care leaders to excel in their roles as they are increasingly being required to both improve quality of care, as well as the administration of the organization. “In our program, we focus on collaboration with other health care leaders and other industry leaders.”

American Sentinel’s MBA Health Care focuses on marketing, finance, strategic planning and human resources and teaches allied health care professionals the fundamentals of business that they can apply to their own health care sector and includes all the disciplines, such as physical therapy, medical technology, radiation technology, nutrition, speech therapy, pharmacology, etc.

“Our MBA Health Care perspective is broader than health care and is not focused solely on patient care, therefore our graduates are prepared to work in the insurance industry, medical device and supply industry, etc.,” says Dr. Linberg.

Next Stop: Doctor of Business Administration

In June 2013, Headley graduated with an MBA Health Care and celebrated the achievement by traveling to Colorado for commencement with her mom by her side. She had the opportunity to meet some of the American Sentinel ‘cheerleaders’ who helped her along the way: a classmate, several professors and her student success advisor, Roxanne Hernandez. “Meeting my advisor and attending graduation was one of the greatest moments of my life,” she says.

Getting to where she is today, however, has taken commitment, hard work and keeping in sight her longtime dream of holding a doctorate degree.

“Right now, I’m in a career that I absolutely love, and I have degrees that nobody can ever take away from me,” she says. Headley is currently researching business doctorate programs and hopes to start in early 2014.

For Headley, just as exciting as the prospect of holding a doctorate degree is finding the career for her. “I genuinely love what I do and I especially love the case management side of things,” she says. “All day long, I get to interact with all kinds of people, and in the end, I know I’ve helped patients get better or I’ve sent them on to someone who can.”
