– Father, Son Graduates Reinforce Importance of Advanced Education for Long-term Career Growth –
AURORA, Colo. – August 25, 2014 – Education starts at home, and for the Hamelin family education isn’t encouraged – it’s a way of life.
Recently, San Diego, Calif.-based Thomas Hamelin, DNP, Executive Leadership graduate and his son, Thomas “TJ” Hamelin, MBA graduate, both earned their advanced degrees from American Sentinel University.
“With the demand for college-educated professionals on the rise, an advanced degree is more valuable than ever before,” says Mary Adams, president at American Sentinel University. “When education is reinforced in the home, it often results in achieving personal growth and long-term success for everyone in the family. The Hamelin’s prove that to be true.”
DNP Enhances Personal Growth
After garnering 30 years of experience in hospital management and administration, Hamelin, now senior director for operations at the University of San Diego Medical Center, decided it was time to get that final degree. In 2012 he enrolled in American Sentinel’s online Doctor of Nursing Practice, Executive Leadership program.
“I sought an advanced degree that would support the type of work I do now,” says Hamelin. “I didn’t find another nursing leadership program like the DNP, Executive Leadership program offered at American Sentinel.”
American Sentinel’s DNP, Executive Leadership program prepares master’s-educated nurses for leadership roles in the healthcare system. The program develops five key competencies: leadership, business intelligence, finance, health policy and health services research.
“It helps me be more competitive, but more than anything, it really fit where I am in my career,” says Hamelin. “I hoped to build connections and share ideas with colleagues at my same level in health organizations all across the country and that was one of the best parts of the DNP program. I’ve learned as much from my peers as I did from the professors.”
American Sentinel offers one of the most flexible DNP programs online available, says Adams.
“Our doctorate of nursing practice combines a rigorous healthcare executive leadership program with the fundamental business skills needed for today’s nursing and healthcare leaders like Thomas,” says Adams.
A Positive Influence
Hamelin’s positive experience at American Sentinel was infectious and he decided to recommend the school to his son, TJ Hamelin, who worked as an account service associate with a leading provider of real-time locating systems (RTLS) for hospitals in California.
“I wanted TJ to have the opportunity to interact with other professionals from all over the world, and I liked what I saw in American Sentinel’s MBA curriculum,” says Hamelin, who earned his MBA at Babson College. “As someone who works full-time and travels often, American Sentinel was a great fit for TJ.”
Hamelin’s recommendation to his son kept in line with the family’s tradition of the pursuit of advanced education. Hamelin earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology and a BSN, MSN and MBA and his wife, Meg, was a community college professor, so earning an advanced degree was always in his son’s future.
“Having my advanced degree meant credibility in fast-growing areas within the medical industry and almost completely made me a stronger candidate for my new job as an account manager at CenTrak,” says TJ Hamelin. “I really like where my career is headed and I get to work in a newer industry that ultimately helps patients and hospitals.”
In June 2014, Hamelin and his son both walked in the American Sentinel Commencement Ceremony in Denver.
For father and son, it was an once-in-a-lifetime experience. “I don’t think too many people in life get to hear their name called out twice at college graduation,” he says. “It was a wonderful experience for us to attend American Sentinel together. I don’t think either of us will ever forget it.”
