Moodle Upgrade December 22-25

American Sentinel is upgrading to a new version of Moodle to provide added security and to take advantage of system improvements. You will not be able to access your courses in Moodle from 9 AM MST on December 22 until 9 AM MST December 26.

We understand that students often use holiday time to work on their studies. We apologize for this inconvenience. However, as a result of the downtime we are extending October A and B term 12 week courses and all November and December terms for one week. For example, the November A term that began November 5 and is scheduled to end December 28 (8 weeks) or January 25 (12 weeks) will end January 4 (8 weeks) or February 1 (12 weeks).

ASU Students Share Their Tips for Success

Last month, during National Distance Learning Week, we asked our students to share some of their best ideas for achieving success as a distance learning student. It takes a special person and unique skills beyond those of a student in a classroom to keep working toward your degree when you are an online student. But that’s what makes ASU students special – the way they shared some great ideas. It’s helped them be more successful so you may want to adopt their ideas as part of your study plans!

ReferralProgram

New Incentives for Referrals

At American Sentinel University, we are always looking for successful students. We have discovered that the best way to find tomorrow's successful student is through the students and alumni succeeding at American Sentinel today. In the past, students and graduates who referred new students were eligible for a $100 Amazon gift card. While this offer is still available, we have some exciting new choices.

For each referred student, the referrer can now choose a free credit hour applied to the next purchase of course credits. For those who would prefer a gift card, referrers can still choose a $100 Amazon card, or they can choose a $100 pre-paid Visa card.

The referrer qualifies for the reward when the referral enrolls in an American Sentinel University degree program and successfully completes one course. If you have questions about the referral program, contact your Student Services Advisor. To make a referral, contact your advisor or use the online form.

Exciting Changes to the MS in Computer Science Program

The twenty-first century is the age of the network, and computer professionals with skills in networking technology will shape that age.

American Sentinel University announces a revamped Master of Science Program in Computer Science that offers students greater flexibility and more choice in shaping their education, by offering new electives grouped into "concentrations"' that focus on specific areas within computer science. The first two concentrations - Computer Programming, and Networking - recognize the increasing importance computer programmers and software engineers play in shaping the contemporary world.

The new concentration-based program has two components: a "core"' of seven courses (from which students must choose five courses) covering the fundamental knowledge of Computer Science; and a concentration of four additional courses chosen from a greatly expanded set of elective courses from the concentration areas.

The program culminates in a four-unit capstone course that allows students to complete a substantial research or design project that demonstrates their mastery of the subject and can serve as a "portfolio"' of work to show to potential employers.

The program starts in January of 2008 with the core and the Computer Programming concentration; the Networking concentration will be rolled out in April 2008.
