American Sentinel Faculty and Staff Present at Instructional Technology Conference

Brian Carlisle, Vice President of Information Technology, and Michael Gibson, Chair of the Information Systems Department, recently participated in the 12th annual Instructional Technology Conference at Middle Tennessee State University in Tennessee. Their presentation discussed American Sentinel University's successful transition from WebCT Campus Edition to the Moodle open-source learning management system and examined the issues currently surrounding open-source learning management systems.

Open-source learning management systems are a viable alternative to commercial learning management system products. Moodle, Sakai, and other open-source projects offer institutions of higher education an opportunity not only to reduce IT costs, but also to be active participants in the development of innovative new features. Open-source learning management systems are not without their issues, however, including potential patent infringement lawsuits from proprietary vendors and less organized technical support.

The presentation was a great success and received very positive feedback from the educators and administrators in attendance. Review the presentation (the presentation is in a pdf format.)
