See Your Classmates in the Graduation Scrapbook

American Sentinel has created a scrapbook for graduates past and present. On this page you'll find photos, videos, and written testimonials from American Sentinel alumni.   We've seeded the site with videos and photos from last year's graduation and we'll have the footage up from this year's graduation soon. If you are a graduate, you can post your own message, picture, or video by following the instructions on the site. If you still have work to do before graduation, check out the site for a motivation boost from your classmates—and make it a goal to join them soon!

ASU Goes Green

Our logo may be blue, but we’re green through and through.

In fact, ASU is going even more green in a big way, with environmentally friendly (and lower cost books) and with a new environmentally-focused degree program.

Distance learning is green by its very nature: students can save huge $$$$ by not driving to class, to the library, to get books, etc. So, in that sense, ASU is already bright green.

But we are doing more! Here’s how:

Custom & eBooks

ASU has converted 20 of its books most in demand to custom publications. Working with McGraw Hill (publisher) and EdMap (distributor), ASU will offer custom books starting July 1 for the books required for its top 20 most popular courses.

Besides books, ASU is also greening its curriculum.

A custom book is simply a book with ONLY those chapters and material needed for a course. Often textbooks contain more material than is needed in a specific course. Under faculty direction, the publisher reprints, on demand, only that material which is needed for the course, and packages it in a lower cost, soft cover.

The result: less printing, less paper, lower shipping cost (think a very reduced “carbon footprint” for all this), and importantly, a LOWER COST FOR STUDENTS AND A GREATLY REDUCED IMPACT ON THE ENVIRONMENT!

ASU plans to work with all publishers to get custom books for every course possible.

Then, as quickly as we can, we’ll start introducing “eBooks” into our curriculum. eBooks are custom books available in electronic form.

"Green MBA"

ASU Dean Phillip Ash is working on a new “sustainability” concentration for the MBA program, which he hopes will be available as early as the fall.

Commenting on the program, Dean Ash said that, “ASU is very aware of the need for professionals in all walks of life to have increased sensitivity to environmental issues. More importantly, we recognize the need to educate business managers with the best practice thinking and programs that positively impact the environment and corporate practice. While these programs are designed initially for MBA students, we will make them available to students in other ASU programs as well. ASU will be among the very first online universities to offer this degree and courses.”

This ASU MBA will have four specialty courses focused on making environmental sustainability an integral part of business practice.

ASU Congratulates DHY and Looks Forward to More Opportunities for Collaboration

For many years, ASU has been working with Ningbo Dahongying Institute (DHY) to assist their students in earning Bachelor degrees. Until recently, DHY could offer Associate degree programs to its students and relied on academic partners like ASU to offer supplemental courses that would allow Chinese students to earn Bachelor degrees. Most of ASU's courses are offered online, but some are offered at DHY's campus in Ningbo, China - about three hours from Shanghai.

Recently, DHY won the approval of Chinese educational authorities to grant Bachelor degrees, and thus achieved University status in China. However, rather than diminishing the level of collaboration between ASU and DHY, a new era of cooperation and growth is now possible.

During a recent visit to Ningbo by ASU's Business and Technology Dean, Phillip Ash, President Wu Guoliang and Dean Ash discussed a new dual degree program and the role ASU's graduate degree programs might play in DHY's future plans.

Many of DHY students think of earning a Bachelor degree in English because they would like to work for a Chinese company involved in exporting and/or importing. What makes even greater sense is a degree in English and Business. Other dual degree combinations may also be made available in the near future. Drs. Wu and Ash also discussed integrating several of ASU's graduate programs with DHY's bachelors degree programs.

Dean Ash in China

ASU adjunct professor, Dr. Yingbing Yu accompanied Dr. Ash to Ningbo to teach several Computer Science courses for Chinese students. The picture on the right shows Dr. Ash and Dr. Yu along with several of Ms. Fiona Yao's faculty members who teach at DHY. During their visit in May, Dr. Ash and Dr. Yu taught three courses for nearly one hundred DHY students. The picture on the right is taken in front of DHY's eagle mascot and magnificent library.  American Sentinel professor Dr. Yu, grew up in China but completed his graduate education in the United States.
