Inside Information Systems
IT professionals were once thought of as geeks in a back room, working silently in keeping the network going. But with criminals and hackers increasingly intent on getting into systems and databases, it's now possible to change that image from geek to hero.
That's part of the goal of our new BS in Information Systems Security. We are striving to offer the best, up-to-date coursework with a lot of hands-on.
One of our new courses -- SEC 410 Network Security with Lab -- introduces you to techniques, methodologies and tools used in building and maintaining secure networks. Topics include types of attacks, countermeasures and prevention techniques. Security assessments, vulnerability testing and penetration testing are also studied. Lab exercises address assessing protocol, network and code vulnerabilities. This course runs in the December B term (8 weeks). The instructor -- John Strand -- is one of the best you'll have.
A new course running early next year is SEC 470 Computer Forensics with Lab. If you watch a lot of CSI Las Vegas, you'll know what this course is about. You'll learn how to exam a computer system for inappropriate use. You'll use tools to look for hidden files, unauthorized access and Trojans. You'll also learn how to document what you find to start the wheels of justice. Learning could not be more fun.
