Associate of Science Health Information Management
(Medical Coding & Billing)

Program Overview

The Associate of Science Degree Health Information Management (Medical Coding & Billing) is intended to build the skills that students need to get a quick start in the profession of medical coding, and prepare them for positions such as Medical Coding Specialist, Medical Records Technician and other similar roles within the Health Information Management field. The program is also designed to prepare students for the Certified Coding Associate exam, which enables them to earn a widely recognized industry certification (AHIMA).

The AS Health Information Management (Medical Coding & Billing) program courses are open for enrollment twice a month.

Program Objectives

In addition to attainment of general education learning objectives, graduates from the Associate of Science Health Information Management program will be prepared to sit for examination to attain AHIMA's certified coding associate certification. Students will also be able to:

  • Explain the role and function of different types of healthcare facilities and environments.
  • Utilize healthcare-related coding and billing software to support the health care administration function.
  • Explain medical terms and abbreviations that are commonly used in health information management systems.
  • Identify the constraints and guidelines that HIPAA places on healthcare systems.
