State Authorization and Licensure
Last updated: September 30, 2020
As a distance education institution, American Sentinel University takes the authorization requirements of each state seriously. American Sentinel University has considered the requirements for each State Department of Higher Education and State Board of Nursing when developing its programs.
Currently, American Sentinel University is an institutional member of the National State Reciprocity Agreement (SARA) which includes reciprocity with forty-nine of the fifty states and the District of Columbia. American Sentinel University is located in Denver, Colorado and updates its SARA registration each year through the Colorado Department of Higher Education.
Licensure
American Sentinel offers Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP), Adult Gerontology Nurse Practitioner (AGNP), and Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) programs that prepare students for national licensure as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN). The programs are designed to prepare graduates with an active, unencumbered registered nurse (RN) license to practice as nurse practitioners. Each State Board of Nursing has its own academic and certification requirements and issues its own credential for an RN to be permitted to practice as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) in that state. We encourage students to understand, evaluate, and consult the appropriate Board of Nursing or state agency in the state in which he or she wishes to practice as an APRN to determine specific requirements by clicking on your State tab below.
American Sentinel University makes no representations or guarantees that completion of American Sentinel University coursework or programs will permit an individual to obtain state licensure, authorization, endorsement, or other state credential. For more information about nurse practitioner certification exams, students should visit the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners at www.aanpcertification.org, the American Nurses Credentialing Center at www.nursecredentialing.org, or other nurse practitioner certification exam websites.
The MSN – Nurse Practitioner Programs are currently offered in North Dakota, Colorado, Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, Mississippi, Missouri, New Jersey, Alabama, Alaska, Arkansas, Hawaii, Illinois, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Texas, Vermont, Virginia, West Virginia, Wisconsin, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Kansas, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, Montana, New Hampshire, North Carolina, Ohio, South Dakota, Wyoming, Iowa, and Indiana.
Additionally, the Family Nurse Practitioner and Adult Gerontology Nurse Practitioner Programs are offered in Maryland, Utah, and California. The MSN-Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner Program is not currently offered in Maryland, California, and Utah.
