Mary Adams, American Sentinel University’s President, Adds to the Discussion on Talk Radio

On Friday, August 31, our own Mary Adams was a featured guest on live Internet radio, based at She was interviewed by host Jodi Glickman, a career consultant, blogger, and author of the book Great on the Job: What to Say, How to Say It. The Secrets of Getting Ahead.

Introductions between Mary and Jodi started out with some friendly banter about the Labor Day holiday – when the host commented that it was back-to-school time, Mary made the point that American Sentinel students can begin courses in any month of the year!

The talk show host then opened the lively discussion by professing her fascination with Mary’s own life path – Mary returned to college 17 years after dropping out to raise her family, and then went on to become the president of two universities.

Other topics that Mary touched on include:

  • The history of distance learning, going way back to the days of correspondence courses.
  • Up-to-date technologies that bring students in close touch with instructors and other students, even allowing them to work on group projects.
  • The impact of individualized attention on student satisfaction levels, and the necessity of tremendous support programs to help online students succeed.
  • The ways in which the so-called Millennial generation is changing education overall, given that they’ve grown up as “digital natives” – and are facing one of the toughest job markets and economies in our history.
  • The impact of the phenomenon known as the Massively Open Online Course (MOOC), and the fact that elite universities now offer them for free on a non-credit basis.

Earlier this year, Mary shared her tips for succeeding at online learning in a blog post. She says she found the best way to stay balanced is to focus on what you are learning, not on the final grade. Most importantly, she says, take the time to celebrate small victories. “As an adult student you want to do well, but a lot of stress can come from wanting to get all As,” says Mary. “I recommend that adult students focus on the big picture. GPA is important, but it’s not the most important thing in your life when you are balancing so much. The learning is what’s important.”
